The Mercer Island Track and Field team lost 78-71 for the girls team and 72.33-64.66 for the boys on senior night against Liberty.

Prior to the meet, there was a brief ceremony to honor the graduating senior class.

“Track [is] great because you get to meet a lot of new people who do a ton of different events. It brings together a group of people who otherwise would not be brought together,” senior Luca Palermo said.

The boys 400 meter was a big event for Mercer Island, with the top three places going to Azad Khan, Brooks Enge, and Quinn Shavey.

“It [was] actually our first and only home meet so it’s really fun. It’s always a better atmosphere when we’re on our home turf,” Palermo said.

The girl’s team saw success in the 200 meter as the top 2 places were earned by Mackenzie Monen and Jenna Martin.

“We have a lot of spirit as well, there’s tons of good sportsmanship and just a ton of cheering at all of the meets which is great,” Palermo said.

Despite losing, the team is looking forward to the future meets, particularly some spots at KingCo.

“Our distance squad is really strong, hoping for some spots at KingCo but we’ll see. Our sprints are pretty good as well,” Palermo said.

The team’s next meet is on April 28th at Hazen at 3:30 pm.
