On Wednesday, April 9, the MIHS baseball team triumphed against Bellevue, winning 6-5. This close game originally had Bellevue in the lead, but with a huge hit by senior Baird Sirianni in the 7th inning the Islanders had the game tied up and ready to steal the win. This was just one incredible play among the many other highlights in the game.
“Both our pitchers Chase Koehler and Quincy Tintle did a great job picking us up tonight,” senior captain Charlie Seneker said. “They kept us in it and limited the free bases which was huge. Tino Pozzo, Baird Sirianni and Quinn Harper all did a great job at the plate today and had great at bats and their progress carried over in the late innings … Charlie Park and Ethan Nguyen both had great at bats that helped lead to our last inning comeback.”
While the baseball team has had a rough start to the season in their past games, currently holding an overall 3-8 record, they have proven they can maintain grit and stay motivated, and this game really reinforced that.
“Our team has really been working on controlling what we can control,” Seneker said. “That really showed in us moving on when faced with adversity. We did a really good job at moving on from mistakes as a collective group and staying in the moment.”
Their next game is Friday, April 11 at Newport High School, where they are excited to see how they do after this recent win.
“I think this game is going to pump some energy and confidence in our team and will lead to a lot more wins,” Seneker said. “We have a really talented squad including a great bullpen that will continue picking us up and a bunch of talented bats that will collect some big hits and make big plays in the field behind our arms. It’ll be a fun year and [you] just gotta keep an eye on the ‘ders as the season progresses.”
