Week in Review September 17-21

MIHS News

  • Mercer Island School Board’s Student Representatives, Meghana Kakubal and Caroline Atkinson, were announced this week.
  • The 2019 National Merit Scholar semifinalists were announced on Thursday, September 13. MIHS has 11 semifinalist students: Alex Benson, Alan Bi, Theo Copley, Nico Galvin, Thomas Horton King, Albert Lam, Andrew Motz, R. Grady Short, Damien Snyder, Chris Toda and Ethan Torok.
  • This year’s Homecoming theme, Blast to the Past, was announced at the Welcome assembly on Friday, September 14.
  • Beginning Monday, September 24, the MIHS schedule will include Connections, a five minute passing-time during which students can talk to their teachers after seventh period. The schedule was adjusted to endure that MIHS would comply with state requirements for student-teacher contact time. School will get out at 3:05.
  • On Friday, September 14, Mercer Island Football won their first home game against Newport with a score of 33-20. The team is currently 3-0 in wins-losses.

Washington state News:

  • The Washington State Fair in Puyallup is open through this weekend, September 23 to September 24. This is the last weekend to attend this year’s fair.
  • Last week, on Wednesday, September 12, Seattle Storm won the WNBA championship.
  • On September 19, a 51-year-old woman was killed in a drive-by shooting in Burien.

National News:

  • Christine Blasey Ford accused Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault. Ford claims that Kavanaugh assaulted her at a high school party in the 1980s. Kavanaugh has denied Ford’s accusation.
