The MIHS Girls Basketball team suffered a 66-58 loss to the Eastlake Wolves on Senior Night, Tuesday, Feb. 4.
“It’s sad that we lost,” senior captain Anna Marsh said. “But you know, last home game, you gotta put it all out there. I think everyone gave it their best effort.”
The team has five senior players — Kate Gregson, Kiera Kelly, Olivia Killian, Anna Marsh and Ayden Nov — as well as senior Team Manager Jaycie Prescott. Before the game, the seniors all gathered to take a photo with their family and receive a gift to commemorate their years of dedication to the team. Additionally, the starting lineup featured all five seniors.
“I’m really proud of everyone,” Marsh said. “I’ve played with them for so long, and I’m just gonna miss this.”
However, the fanfare and jovial attitudes were slightly dampened by the strong Eastlake team, who were up 11-17 by the end of the first quarter. The trend continued at half, and MIGB went into halftime down 23-35.
The team never caught up to Eastlake, as they were down 53-35 by the end of the third quarter. However, the team changed the momentum in the final quarter, outscoring Eastlake 23-13. Head Coach Ariel Sciammas chose to close out the quarter’s final minutes by yet again playing all five seniors, a choice met by roaring applause from the spectators. However, Marsh did foul out of the game before the all-senior squad heard the final buzzer.
With their last game of the regular season over, the team now moves on to the postseason, with their first game taking place against Liberty on Tuesday, Feb. 11.
