Senior Night Football Game Goes Into Double Overtime Before Loss

Friday, Oct. 18. – The Mercer Island football team lost 28-31 on senior night to Lake Washington at their last home game.

At the beginning of the first quarter, Mercer Island started out rough, with Lake Washington getting into their territory early in the game. Mercer Island was able to prevent them from scoring, but on the Islanders’ next drive, Lake Washington intercepted the ball and scored a touchdown, putting the Islanders behind 0-7.

Mercer Island fought back in the second quarter, coming back to score a touchdown, tying the game at 7-7. 

Lake Washington marched down the field, but they failed to make it into the end zone. They then decided to go for a field goal, but the Islanders blocked, finishing the first half on a strong note.

Mercer Island started with favorable field position in the second half and they scored another touchdown, but Lake Washington made a comeback and ran past the Islanders’ defense on their drive, scoring a touchdown and tying the game again at 14-14.

Mercer Island intercepted the ball from Lake Washington at the beginning of the fourth quarter. They tried to score in their drive but could not get past Lake Washington’s defense. In Lake Washington’s following drive, they scored, putting the Islanders behind 14-21. 

With less than two minutes left in the game, Mercer Island got an opportunity to score, but their drive started out rough when they were unable to gain ground on Lake Washington. In an incredible comeback, Mercer Island scored a touchdown, tying the game 21-21. Lake Washington had another opportunity to score but Mercer Island intercepted the ball from them, ending the fourth quarter and bringing the game into overtime.

Lake Washington got the first possession and scored, but Mercer Island fought back on their drive and scored, tying the game at 28-28 after a nerve-wracking kick for the extra point. The game ended up going into second overtime.

Mercer Island got the first possession, but unfortunately were not able to score, setting up Lake Washington for a winning drive. Lake Washington scored a field goal, winning the game and bringing the final score to 28-31.

Mercer Island fought hard against Lake Washington in an exhilarating game, but in the end it was a disappointing loss for the Islanders at their last home game of the season. They will play away at Liberty Oct. 25.
