Mercer Island Boys Baseball played against Lake Washington Wednesday, May 8 at their KingCo championship. Winning this game would have meant going straight to state, however unfortunately they took a loss and are now heading to a play-in game for one last chance to make it to state.
While the team took the overall loss of 4-2 during last night’s game, there were many notable highlights within each play.
“Our small ball on offense did a great job producing runs,” pitcher Charlie Seneker said. “We reached 1st safely two times off of well executed bunts.”
Both the highlights as well as the setbacks of this game prepared them for their next game by helping them understand their strengths and weaknesses, including making small mistakes that give up free bases to the other team.
“Hitting and winning the freebie war is always an emphasis,” Seneker said. “If we give up [fewer] free bases than the other team and put the ball in play we consistently have better outcomes […] We will learn and grow from this game. [There is a] lot of baseball left this year.”
The team is ready to channel their energy into the next game against Juanita Thursday, May 9. Losing to Lake Washington was not their last chance to make it to state, so they took this game as a chance to see where they are at and hopefully improve for their one.
“This game means that we have another opportunity to beat a good baseball team and learn from our mistakes,” Seneker said. “We are going to continue to be loose, relaxed and confident.”
Come cheer them on at their next game against Juanita today, May 9, at Bannerwood Park at 7 p.m.
