On Monday, Oct. 24, the Islanders’ Boys Golf team placed 3rd at the District Tournament and secured a spot at the State competition next May.
“It feels great knowing that our team [has] put in a lot of work and [that we] have another shot at taking a second state championship in a row,” junior Wonjoon Seo said.
The Tournament took place at Druids Glen Golf Course in Covington, WA, where it took around 6 hours for 84 golfers to get through 18 holes in rainy and windy conditions.
Mercer Island’s four best scorers shot 306 in total.
“We need to keep dialing in our swings, specifically, our wedge games from 60-130 yards so we can hit more greens and make more birdies,” senior captain Spencer Smith said.
In the Individualist Category, junior Brian Murdoch had the best score (76) out of the 24 players.
“Murdoch played great and advanced to state which was super exciting for our team,” Smith said.
The other three teams that will be advancing to state are Bishop Blanchet High School, Roosevelt High School, and Bellevue High School.
“I am super optimistic for [the] state [tournament],” Smith said. “We have the most experience out of any team competing and [I] know that we can repeat if we work hard in the off season.”
With the date and location to be determined we look forward to cheering on the team as they fight for their second State Championship in a row.
