The Mercer Island Girls Swim and Dive team defeated Newport with an overall score of 125-61, Thursday, Sept. 15.
Thursday’s meet was the first home meet for Mercer Island Girls Swim and Dive. The swimmers couldn’t wait to get to the season started with a bang.
“I feel like the energy is really good, [Newport] has a huge team, they’re a 4A school, but I think our cheers [were] matching theirs pretty well, even though they have close to double the number of swimmers,” senior captain Alexis Buchan said.
The meet started off full of energy with the swimmers and divers cheering loudly. The senior captains wanted the support to be as loud as possible.
“We’re just gonna try to be as loud as we can with this meet. We really need to bring up the energy, [Newport] is a really good team [..], so part of our strategy is to just be as loud as possible,” Buchan said.
The senior captains are focusing on including the swimmers that are newer to the team. At this meet, she wanted to make sure that everyone was participating and having fun.
“[Swim and Dive] is a no-cut sport, so we really want to get those girls that are just starting to swim really excited and used to swimming and the environment. [We want to] get them really excited for their races, even though this might be the first time that they’re swimming them,” Buchan said.
The Swim and Dive team takes pride in the environment and inclusion. They want to make sure that everyone puts as much energy as they can into the meets.
“I feel like as seniors, the seniors on the team are really gonna try to lift [the new swimmers] up, [us] people that have been swimming for a while. [We want to] really get them excited and show them what swimming is all about and get them introduced into our team environment, it really is the most important part,” Buchan said.
Mercer Island Girls Swim and Dive is preparing to face Liberty High School next Thursday, Sept. 22, at an away meet.
