In their second game of the season, the Mercer Island Girls Lacrosse team defeated Seattle Prep 16-3 Tuesday, May 11, bringing their season record to 2-0.
The Islanders started off strong with three quick scores in the first five minutes from senior Annabelle Gersch and junior Molly Brodsky, who then carried their momentum throughout the rest of the game.
“It was a really intense game,” junior Rian Sherper said. “Seattle Prep [was] playing really well and I don’t think the score quite reflected that.”
Gersch and Brodsky contributed 12 of the team’s 16 points, seven of which came in the first half. However, the Islanders found more success later on when the rest of the players began to control the game and play with more fluidity.
“Annabelle and Molly are both very consistent players, so I think they dominated in both the first and the second half,” Sherper said. “But I think in the second half especially, the rest of the team really found [its] groove again and came together a little bit better.”
Mercer Island’s two victories this season have not only come from offensive points, but from the defense as well. The Islanders have only given up an impressive four combined points in their matchups against Seattle Prep and Snohomish.
“The players that make up our defense and the way that it’s structured make it really really strong, and that’s why the score is what it is against such a great team,” Sherper said.
The team will now look ahead to the rest of their matchups, where they will do what they can to continue their winning streak.
“We need to keep taking it game by game, and we can’t let [being 2-0] go to our head,” Sherper said. “Every team is different, and we need to come into every game with a ‘we-have-to-win’ mindset.”
Mercer Island Girls Lacrosse will face off against Bainbridge, their rival, at home Thursday, May 20.
