Mercer Island Participates No Kings Day

More than 1,100 people turned up at Aubrey Davis Park on Saturday to participate in the annual “No Kings” protest, joining more than 7 million around the United States.

Across 2,700 cities, millions of Americans came together to protest the Trump administration amidst its concerning government shutdown. On Mercer Island, protestors walked from Aubrey Davis (“The Lid”) Park across the I-90 bridge into Seattle. With honking cars passing by, protesters proudly marched while wearing costumes and holding signs as they voiced their concerns for pressing issues, such as the morality of ICE, as well as perceived general corruption and abuse of power within the Trump administration.

“Everyone should be able to feel safe in America,” MIHS sophomore Shea Moncaster said, as she protested Trump’s use of ICE to deport undocumented immigrants.

But not just students were concerned with the integrity of the current administration.

The Trump administration is crooked,” Gerard, a Bellevue resident, said.

They are only interested in “filling their pockets and their friends’ pockets with money”. Many focused on the need for peaceful protests, such as 27-year resident Yurka Bailey, who encouraged everyone to fight for what they believe.

“If [you’re] against Trump, [you] should get involved,” she concluded while marching to proclaim her “day one” issues with Trump’s leadership. Overall, this monumental day served as a reminder of our country’s constitutional right to protest what they think is right, while trying to solidify the democratic ideals that our country was built on.
