Macrina Becomes New Study Hub

With their grand opening on July 5, 2025, Macrina Bakery, a comfortable, delicious and aesthetic cafe, came to downtown Mercer Island. Its arrival has certainly piqued the city’s interest, and this might just become the new go-to study area for MIHS students.

Located just across the street from Mercerdale Park, Macrina is a great area to meet up in study groups or work individually.

“The aesthetic of it all is just so nice,” MIHS student Maya Moncaster said. “To have another coffee shop that isn’t Starbucks or Met Market on the Island is great, it’s such a cute place to hang out.”

Students have traditionally gravitated toward places like Starbucks or Metropolitan Market, and if you were to run a grocery errand on a random evening, the chances of running into an MIHS academic weapon are extremely high. Now, the novelty of Macrina seems to draw more students to the new spot. Macrina has a large area inside with white walls and floral decor, and there is an outdoor patio as well for the sunnier days.

The bakery itself has been in the area for a while, as founder Leslie Mackie opened a location in Belltown, Seattle, in 1993. The chain has been known for its exciting, delicious food that has had customers lining up out the door. So while working on a homework assignment, you might want to check out some of their famous food and drink options.

Their popular avocado toast’s refreshing lemony flavor will definitely light up your afternoon, and is perfect when paired with their multitude of drinks such as coffees, teas and juices. While it is a bit on the pricey side at $9 for a single slice of sourdough, the quality of the toast is well worth it.

If the morning is the best time for you to fill up, try the Brioche Egg Sandwich, a hearty meal with fried egg, cheese and a bun — topped with an apple butter spread. Macrina also has an assortment of pastries ranging from croissants to parfaits to tarts and more.

Macrina has such a variety of food that it does not matter if you have a sweet tooth or a savory one — there will always be something for you. Even if the newness dies down, this bakery seems well on its way to becoming a new MI staple for hanging out, dining and providing a workspace.
