“A Minecraft Movie” is a fantasy and comedy film with the most bland, funniest script, and was released on April 4.
Instead of creating a distinct narrative for its audience, the story lacks depth and mostly relies on the gameplay aspects of Minecraft. Four misfits are drawn into the Overworld, a dimension like a cubic wonderland, where they must cooperate with Steve, a master craftsman, in order to get back home.
Regardless of its rating for children, there was an overall feeling of enjoyment and the film’s ability to appeal to families and young audiences.
I was relieved that this wasn’t canon to the actual Minecraft game given the way the movie is telling the tale. Other than the references and easter eggs that popped up, I didn’t find myself enjoying it except hearing everyone in the theater become crazy over the quotes Steve said like “chicken jockey” or “flint and steel.”
The most notable allusion, however, is when a pig with a crown on its head appears. Henry queries, “Is he some kind of king?” and Steve says, “No … That’s a legend.” I was pleased to see that this is related to Technoblade, a Minecraft YouTuber whose logo featured a pig with a crown on its head. This easter egg is heartbreaking because he sadly passed away in June 2022 at the age of 23 from cancer.
The Minecraft community adored him, and his passing brought almost everyone online together, making people happy everywhere. They even included a splash screen in the game with the words “Technoblade Never Dies!”. By solidifying his legacy in the film and guaranteeing that his influence on the game would not be forgotten, Minecraft carries on this trend with this Easter egg.
There were multiple references and cameos such as other famous Youtubers: DanTDM, Aphmau, MumboJumbo, and LDShadowLady.
Furthermore, Jason Momoa and Jack Black’s characters’ relationship and characterization were the film’s strongest points. Black’s performance as Steve was particularly impressive, especially when he uttered the sarcastic remarks that led the crowd to erupt.
Although I genuinely don’t think this is a great film, both adults and children can enjoy it if they approach it with an open mind.
