Disney’s live-action version of “Snow White,” which debuted in theaters on March 21, is an agonizingly awful film to see for the first time.
The film has several controversies, such as discussions over the current casting decisions and political remarks made by the lead actresses. These have affected public opinion and contributed to the picture’s poor box office performance. The day before the film’s trailer, Rachel Zegler’s vocal support for Palestine and Gal Gadot’s pro-Israel stance sparked criticism.
Zegler’s portrayal of Snow White is less of a “proper” character and more of a walking TED Talk on empowerment, whereas Gadot’s portrayal of the Evil Queen conveys the menace of a mildly angry librarian.
Not to mention, the dwarfs are a CGI catastrophe. Their presence can be described as “nightmare fuel,” resembling the unholy offspring of garden gnomes. The designs are so jarring that you question half of their scenes and ask why Disney didn’t hire real actors.
The movie’s soundtrack veers between unmemorable new songs and ripped-down classics, with each song delivering a new assault on the eardrums. While watching and according to other reviews, it sounded like a broken Roomba served as the inspiration for the choreography.
Visually, it is more than a disaster to watch. I intend to question the budget usage in this movie. This estimated $270 million budget was used for remarkably lifeless scenes, with muted hues and overwashed backgrounds.
From the very start, Disney has abandoned storytelling in favor of this film. “Snow White” is not a movie; it’s a manifesto and a grotesque insult to its source material. Personally, I did not connect with the film.
Children should be able to look up to all kinds of heroes, but rewriting a classic to fit an “everyone can be everything” DEI principle type takes away the uniqueness of a story.
I would not recommend anyone watch this, let alone watch it on Disney Plus since it’s a soulless cash grab that buries its legacy. I would not recommend this if you are looking for a joyful and magical story with no social politics. Instead, I would recommend any originals other than the remake.
