The MIHS Cheer Team attended their second ever state competition on Jan 24, travelling to Battle Ground High School to bring home a third-place win and an incredibly fulfilled team. Their triumph was in the 3A traditional non-tumbling category. Junior captain Kate Weisfield explained that qualifying for the competition was an accomplishment itself, so going on to place made for an eternally special memory.
The team’s success showcased a product of the hard work that came prior to the competition. “[Preparation] involved two 8-hour long practice sessions, multiple competitions in preparation and 3-4 morning practices [a week] since November to prepare and perform this routine,” Weisfield said.
Two years ago, Mercer Island Cheer had never competed at this level, while this year their performance was recognized as one of superbness. The advent of this turnaround derived from an exceptionally passionate and united group of cheerleaders. “What makes the team special is the sense of camaraderie, getting up at 6 am before school isn’t easy but the team always makes it fun,” Weisfield said. “Our hard work and bonding has made our team grow strong.”
This team bond is something they value and – being beside one another through the busy competition seasons, numerous fundraisers and long Saturday practices – has become one of their strengths. Notably, additional team traits they felt strong in going into the competition were “strong teamwork, determination and ability to support one another,” Weisfield said.
Acknowledging these strengths, she also recognizes the necessary areas the team has dedicated extra time and effort into. “Every year we hope to improve on our skills by advancing in stunts and cleaning up our routine.” Having gone from a history of not qualifying for state, to competing but not placing in 2024 to placing third in 2025, the team is already on the track of improving, and therefore feel optimistic about their future. Weisfield is eager to continue this growth when she competes in her final senior season. “Next year we could improve on our cleanliness and execution of stunts, as well as the difficulty of our routine,” she said.
“Overall, getting third place at state was an amazing accomplishment, and it’s a testament to the team’s dedication and spirit.”
