Mercer Island Girls’ Gymnastics placed third in the fourth meet of the season while competing against Lake Washington, Redmond and Eastlake, who received first, second and fourth, respectively.
“Meets against Lake Washington are pretty intimidating because they are a cut team and all have super impressive skills executed very well,” junior Captain Maya Moncaster said. “We still had a lot of fun competing and cheering for each other […] We have little nicknames and jokes we say when we cheer. I think this makes competing a little less scary and feels a bit more low stakes.”
Despite the challenging competition, the meet went well, with many participants on bars and beam with many attempting fun tricks throughout their routines.
“Yes, of course doing gymnastics and showing off the skills we have been working on is exciting and rewarding in its own way,” Moncaster said, “but having a supportive team full of friends is what makes it fun.”
Although they only placed third out of four teams, because of the focus they put into improving their skills it did not end up being a setback.
“I think that one goal is to have more people compete all around instead of just one or two events,” Moncaster said.
Come support them at their upcoming meets or at their Senior Night on Wednesday, January 15th!
