Beetlejuice Beetlejuice: A Review From the Living

After almost 36 years, the long awaited sequel of the Tim Burton movie, “Beetlejuice,” has finally debuted on Sept. 6, 2024.

The cast of “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” has some familiar faces, such as Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz, Michael Keaton returning to play the iconic role of Beetlejuice, and Catherine O’Hara playing the hilarious Delia Deetz. The new movie also features a few new additions to an all-star cast including Monica Bellucci as Delores, Danny DeVito as Janitor, and Jenna Ortega as Astrid Deetz. Costume designer Colleen Atwood has also returned to the set to create new intriguing and interesting costumes.

“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” focuses on Lydia Deetz’s daughter Astrid Deetz nearly trading her life to finally have a chance to see her dead father again. Along with that, Astrid’s short-lasting love interest Jeremy, played by Arthur Conti, tricks Astrid into falling in love with him to make him immortal. Adding to that, Lydia Deetz has a love dilemma when Rory (Justin Theroux) asks her to marry him. She later finds out that he was lying all along, and just wanted her money from her hit show, “Ghost House.” Adding to that, Beetlejuice’s ex-wife comes back to life as she attempts to suck the soul out of everyone in her path. All the while, Beetlejuice is still trying to convince Lydia to marry her and almost succeeds.

The three main plot lines all converge together at the end of the movie, making everything feel busy. There was too much going on from Astrid almost ending up on a train to the Great Beyond, to Beetlejuice’s psycho ex-wife almost killing everyone. They could have split up the two plots into two different movies. There was just too much trying to fit into the sequel.

Besides the busyness of the movie, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” was highly entertaining and a good movie to watch with family. From the funny comments to the quirky characters, the movie did not disappoint. Overall, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” was funny, entertaining, witty and well worth watching.
